kayumanggi Pinoy rock band is the manifestation of the exploration of a Filipino identity. The original all-Tagalog Pinoy rock compositions of Kokoy Severino express his meditations upon his culture of origin in the context of a global community of cultures, and explore issues such as the painful longing for the homeland, the political violence that permeates Philippine society, and the enigma of nationalism, inspired and informed by his travels in the Philippines and his work with persecuted communities. Described in Dirty Linen Folk and World Music Magazine (Baltimore MD) as "obliquely political and colorfully poetic."

instrumentation: kubing, agong, kulintang, percussion, flute, saxophone, bass, guitars, vocals

discography: “nagsilipat ang lahat sa Amerika” e.p. fosforo records 2001 (“everyone has moved to America”), “dati” single kayumanggi Pinoy rock records 2003 (“since long ago”)

(September 27, 2020)

I am very honored that kayumanggi Pinoy rock band is invited to perform this Sunday at Sigwa: A Cultural Night of Remembrance and Resistance, a virtual event to mark the anniversary of the declaration of martial law in the Philippines on September 23, 1972. This Texas incarnation of kayumanggi Pinoy rock band features the immensely talented Joyce Day, Bill Day, and Stiggs. I am also incredibly honored to be invited as a panelist in the discussion segment of the event.
The martial law era established by then president Ferdinand Marcos is one of the darkest chapters in modern Philippine history, during which basic human rights were stripped from common people through brutal repression, and countless people disappeared, were tortured, or killed at the hands of government authorities. But make no mistake, disappearances and extrajudicial killings continued long after martial law ended...
