kayumanggi Pinoy rock band is the manifestation of the exploration of a Filipino identity. The original all-Tagalog Pinoy rock compositions of Kokoy Severino express his meditations upon his culture of origin in the context of a global community of cultures, and explore issues such as the painful longing for the homeland, the political violence that permeates Philippine society, and the enigma of nationalism, inspired and informed by his travels in the Philippines and his work with persecuted communities. Described in Dirty Linen Folk and World Music Magazine (Baltimore MD) as "obliquely political and colorfully poetic."

On behalf of the kayumanggi Pinoy rock band collective, I would like to thank the League of Filipino Students of the University of the Philippines-Diliman and the Nationalist Study Movement for allowing us to share our music at the SUPERTYPHOONS AND SUPERPROFITS: A Roundtable Discussion on Imperialist Plunder and the Environmental Crisis in the Philippines event on November 28. It was a true honor to be among the deeply conscious activists leading the struggle for rights and dignity of the Filipino people. It was a tremendously informative discussion led by the selfless and dedicated people on the front lines of the struggle.
I am once again truly honored to be in the lineup of extremely talented artists to read my Tagalog poetry in the Lumikha 2021: We Are Growing. Arts Showcase presented by the Pilipino American Unity for Progress (UniPro) on Friday January 22, 2021, beginning at 7:00 pm Houston, Texas time (global times listed below). This is a virtual, live-stream event. To gain access, please register using the following Eventbrite link - https://lumikha2021.eventbrite.com. There is a suggested donation for those who are able.
This year's Lumikha showcase theme is about growth and interconnectedness of the community. I will be speaking my word piece entitled isinilang habang umaayaw ("born begrudgingly"), which is also one of the tracks in kayumanggi Pinoy rock band's e.p. nagsilipat ang lahat sa Amerika. I will also be reciting sa iyong natuyong ilalim ng sapa ng mga rosa ("in your dry creekbed of roses"), which is a part of the song sabi nila.
For those of you who would like to read ahead, below are the words. My utmost thanks to Aya Seraspi of Baybayin Buhayin for her editing assistance. Baybayin Buhayin is an advocacy organization spearheading the revival of the traditional Pilipino alphabet and the instruction of the masses in its usage.
