HANOI, VIETNAM - November 2014

In this edition of the Adventures of Kokoy, we explore the capital of an ancient kingdom in between matches of the Southeast Asian football championship tournament, the Suzuki Cup, to find a peaceful, stable, and warm people well on the way to recovery from decades of brutal warfare.

All photos by Kokoy.

Despite the opening up of the economy in recent years, there are reminders that Vietnam is still very much a police state.

In contrast to Ho Chi Minh City, where you can find a Burger King immediately outside the airport, Hanoi has seen negligible infiltration of western fast food. There are no Starbucks; all the coffee shops are small Vietnamese-owned, and crowded with hipsters until late at night.

This place reminds you of beauty salons in Houston, Texas.

The best food in the Old Quarter of Hanoi is right on the sidewalk.
